With absolutely no hope of getting selected, I applied for Women Who Code Delhi Mentorship Program 3.0 about which I came to know from LinkedIn. Sometimes good things in life appear when you least expect them. I felt lucky to be among 47 selected mentees out of 800+ applicants and I knew I had to make the most of this wonderful opportunity.

After confirming the acceptance for the program, all mentees were invited for a Program Briefing Session where we were told about the structure of the 5-week mentorship program.

My mentor was Himanshi Goyal Ma’am who was a Software Engineer Intern at Microsoft in 2020. I was really inspired by her profile and was looking forward to having a conversation with her.

I had my first call with my mentor along with 2 other mentees. Our mentor was friendly and shared preparation tips and other experiences with us. She identified our strengths and weaknesses by the brief introduction we gave and assigned small tasks accordingly for the first week. We were asked to give Leetcode and CodeChef Contests over the weekend to improve speed and create a Web-based Game to brush up on our development skills. She also asked us to apply for GirlScript Summer of Code which is one of the best events to begin Open Source Contributions as a beginner. She also told us about Google Kickstart which is a beginner-friendly coding contest.

All of us mentees shared similar interests in Competitive Programming and Web Development. We had a separate group call where we discussed ongoing events and internship opportunities.

Overall, the first week of the program was full of learning. I was really inspired by one of the thoughts of my mentor which was to have deadlines for everything we do and I’m glad that I am following this thumb rule daily. Looking forward to the upcoming weeks of productivity and learning.
